Passport Application Assistance
If you are unable to find a suitable guarantor for a new passport application, The notary at enotarypublic.ca can prepare a statutory declaration in place of a guarantor.
Who can act as a guarantor for applicants in Canada according to Government guidelines?
The guarantor must possess a Canadian passport valid for either five or ten years, or one that has expired within the past year on the day the application is submitted. They must have known the applicant personally for at least two years. For minors, the guarantor must have been acquainted with the child and their parent or legal guardian for at least two years, with knowledge of the child. The guarantor must be a Canadian citizen aged 18 years or older. They must have been at least 16 years old when they applied for their Canadian passport.
Additional Details:
The guarantor is required to provide their passport details on the application. Passport Canada may contact the guarantor for verification. The guarantor must reside in Canada or the United States. Other residency areas are authorized for this type of application – check the Passport Canada website for details.
Statutory Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor:
Applicants without an eligible guarantor can use a statutory declaration instead. The appropriate form (Form PPTC 132) is available at any Passport Canada office or can be obtained by contacting Passport Canada.
The applicant must swear or declare the truth of their application information before the notary at enotarypublic.ca and sign it. The lawyer will administer the oath or solemn declaration.
